Photo Book Hacks: The Tools That Actually Save You Time
I absolutely love photo books. I have about ten of them in my home, and have gifted more to friends and family as odes to our shared trips or years or big occasions spent together. It was the first thing I looked forward to doing after I got married, and the sweetest end of year ritual I held onto for every year of marriage for nine years.
Then one day, my habit and hobby of building photo books came to a crashing halt, because all of a sudden I no longer had the luxury of time and energy to spend to make the photo books I so loved. In truth, each and every photo book I made took weeks of picking photos, culling photos, formatting photos to fit on pages, etc. The time and energy always seemed worth it, until I became a parent and it haunted me on my neverending to do list, a source of guilt and shame and less of one of joy and delight.
I found myself searching online and informationally interviewing my parent friends, asking the one question of: What is your system of wrangling and doing something with your ever growing camera rolls? Some folks had a light album / foldering system on their iphones they kept up with (ex, cataloging throughout the year so it’s easy to know which ones to print for what reason), others - through blood, sweat and tears - hung onto an annual keepsake ritual as a labor of love for their family’s traditions - but most? Gave up entirely and live with the reality of randomly printing things when they think of it, and otherwise continue adding to their camera rolls without looking back.
My favorite saying is “don’t reinvent the wheel” - and so I’ve been determined to figure out ways to work smarter, not harder, while reigniting my love and habit of rescuing the best of my camera roll, in a device-free, physical type of way.
I am, in fact, a huge believer in tech + tools that can save you time. So here’s my breakdown of what I’ve found out there that might be useful to you if you’re in my same boat.

Duplicate photo hacks: declutter before you curate - iPhone & Clever Cleaner
Most camera rolls are padded with more exact duplicates and near-duplicate bursts than people realize, the eleven versions of the same jump shot, the same photo saved twice from a group chat. Clearing that out first makes every later step faster, since you’re choosing from hundreds of real options instead of thousands of near-copies.
iPhones already catch exact duplicates for free: Photos, then Albums, then Utilities, then Duplicates. Worth running once, but it misses similar shots and bursts entirely. For that, something like Clever Cleaner scans for near-duplicates too, and processes everything on your device instead of uploading your library anywhere. Five minutes, genuinely worth it before you touch any photo book tool so that you’re starting with a more reasonable pool of content to choose from.
I personally would stay away from any tools that leverage cloud based AI out of privacy concerns, but tools that work on device - to me - feel a lot safer since you know your camera roll isn’t being shared with any online server.
The best auto layout photo book tools right now - Chatbooks & Mixbook
Once your library’s actually clean, the next time and energy suck is layout. A couple of services have built real automation into this step, each solving it a little differently.
Chatbooks has tools that automatically lays out and formats the photos onto pages for you, once you bring in your photo selections. Their tech is pretty intuitive so as long as you’re okay with letting go of creative control (or, make edits after that first pass), this could be your new best friend.
Mixbook, normally the drag-and-drop, design-every-page-yourself option, recently rolled out an AI Story Mode: describe the book you want in plain language and it spits out a starting layout you can then edit by hand. It’s like AI prompting, but specifically for photo books. This sounds ideal at first, but, you of course need to trust and love what AI comes up with. But if you’re up for an adventure, and don’t care to be involved in the weeds of design, this is a great option for you.
A three in one time saver - njuta
Spoiler alert: yes, this is my tool that I built because I wasn’t fully satisfied with the mix of options out there. I’m a lazy person and what I really wanted was a one stop shop for a) cleaning/decluttering my camera roll, b) making first pass decisions for me on photos to print, and c) a simple, quality layout I can trust and not have any desire to tweak.
njuta automatically - on your device, like Clever Cleaner - sorts through your camera roll every season/three months to pick 30 moments that are print worthy. You have a window of time, of course, to make edits to that top 30, but you’re not starting from choosing from hundreds of photos, you now have something to react to that will superboost your ability to finish the book. Then last but not least, the photo and text spread is fixed for every single page: photo featured on the right side, and a page on the left side left mostly blank for you to fill in with your handwriting or scrapbooking tool of choice. A little info is on that page so you remember the date & location (if present) that pairs the photo it’s highlighting.
I am extraordinarily and obviously biased so I’ll say I’m choosing njuta all day long, but, if you are someone who cares to customize details like cover design, page layout, and/or want to make a one off book that’s not season/time specific - then unfortunately, njuta may not be it for you.
